8 December 2019 – Rimau 7s dream to retain the gold medal the won 2 years back was stopped by the host, Philippines. Malaysia 7s team went down 0 – 19 in the final match.
This is the third straight time Malaysia 7s team advance to the final after Singapore in 2015 and Kuala Lumpur 2017 where they won gold for the first time.
The round robin saw Malaysia finished in the second spot with 4 wins and a lost, to Philippines. Both Malaysia and Philippines secured the spot in the final after the 4th match, with 100% record. The last round robin match saw Phillippines in total control as the Volcanoes recorded 24 – 0 over Rimau. That was certainly a signal of things to come in the final.
2 yellow card for Malaysia during the final put us on the back foot. The Philippines lead 14 – 0 at the end of the first half with 2 tries before they took full advantage of a man extra to score their 3rd and secured the gold medal.
